"Several issues were noted," Greer said, "and will be corrected, but overall the materials handling facility appears to be very well designed." Greer said about 70 percent of the equipment has now been delivered to the construction site at the Synfuels Plant. "We set the stripper, which was delivered last month, and received the carbon dioxide compressor," Greer said. "We will be seeing a large volume of equipment delivered in January as well." Greer said an important piece scheduled to arrive Jan. 14 is the package boiler, which will be used to make steam for the urea plant. The boiler will be placed in the area where the old liquid waste incinerator (LWI) was located in the Synfuels Plant. The LWI was recently demolished and the area is being prepared for the boiler. The contractor finished the demolition on time, below budget and safely. "A carefully orchestrated plan is being developed to move the boiler to the old LWI site," Greer said. "The boiler will need to be carefully moved through the plant on the plant roads and then lifted to its foundation." Other equipment scheduled to arrive includes the materials- handling equipment and the synthesis stack. Greer said the plant maintenance staff have been busy completing preventive maintenance plans for each piece of new equipment required for the project. "It has been a collaborative effort between many groups at the plant," Greer said. Marten Brenny is constructing the main control room for the project and is nearly 80 percent complete. The control room structure is up, the walls are being sheetrocked, while the raised floor and lockers are being added. The control room is expected to be commissioned in late February. RUST is working in multiple areas of the project, including preparation for the carbon dioxide compressor. They are placing the concrete tabletop, which is raised and sits on pillars. They continue to work on adding metal grading and structural steel for the melt building and are preparing to pour the concrete floor. Greer said RUST plans to begin placing structural steel for the granulation building on Jan. 20. They also completed laying the new cooling water piping and are working on backfilling that area. Rice Construction is the new contractor on site and recently mobilized. They hold the contract for the materials handling concrete foundations, which includes foundations for the transfer tower, screening tower and storage building. The bid package for the erection of the materials handling facilities has been sent out and is due the end of January. Some new faces on the construction team include Rory Hochsprung, who was named the commissioning manager, and will work closely with Lucas Teigen, who was recently named the onsite Basin Electric/Dakota Gas construction manager for the project. Hochsprung and Teigen will work closely with Worley Parsons construction management throughout the duration of the project to coordinate and plan all construction and tie-ins to the Synfuels Plant, bring equipment online and commission the new facility. "We are excited to have Lucas and Rory as part of our construction team," Greer said. "They both bring positive energy and significant experience to the project." ■ The hustle and bustle at the construction site continues as nearly 400 contractors are on site building the project, which is now about 20 percent complete. Contractors work to attach the crane to a Stamicarbon vessel in preparation to unload the massive vessel at the urea construction site. In November, three vessels arrived on site after travelling by land and sea thousands of miles from the manufacturing site in Austria.
